St. Kitts and Shitten Bay
After the excitement of Saba we headed off to St. Kitts on Monday. It was another interesting island that had the remnants of a fort on a hill as we entered the bay. We checked in at Port Zante where the cruise ships come in. It was a lively place and we were happy to get back on our yacht and find a peaceful anchorage. We chose 'Shitten Bay' which was not aptly named. It was a beautiful little bay and we had the wonderful experience to snorkel with an eagle ray that was very curious and kept coming up to us to check us out. It was one of those moments that I didn't have my camera but the memory was enough to last forever. The eagle ray went about it's business rolling and diving and feeding on plankton. It was beautifully marked with large spots and unfortunately for the ray it didn't have a tail! Ian got the tender and we explored the rest of the bay snorkelling. After several weeks of Ian harping on to me about the importance of tying knots correctly the tables turned. As I was snorkelling I heard Ian cry out 'Sheryl I need your help'. I snorkelled over to him and he was holding the rope to the dinghy with a loose end of the rope. 'Whoops I've lost the anchor' he announced. I ducked dived down around the area where we anchored the dinghy and eventually found the anchor. What a relief it was brand new and too valuable to lose. Anyway I soon learned that Ian and anchors don't mix as he hurt his back whilst pulling up the anchor on Faraway the next morning. We decided to swap roles for the day and his anchor skills weren't as practiced as mine and he had to haul in the last few metres of the 70 pound anchor and chain manually while I drove the boat what bliss. The photo shows Ian scanning the bay for his lost anchor. St. Kitts looked like a beautiful island but unfortunately we didn't have enough time to explore it properly as we got a call from the riggers in St. Maarten asking us to come back for our spinnaker pole fitting as soon as possible.
